This hotel has accessible parking spaces, but blue badge holders still have to pay for parking, which costs £7 per day.  Guide dogs are welcome.  There are 10 accessible bedrooms which have adapted bathrooms and lower fixtures and fittings.  They also have vibrating pillow alarms.  There is no restaurant in the hotel but the pub next door is also wheelchair accessible.  The airport is 10 minutes away by car, or a shuttle bus to the train station is also provided.  This is connected by skyrail to the airport building.

Novotel Birmingham Airport

The Novotel is on-site, opposite Terminal 1 at the airport.  It has 6 accessible rooms and can provide vibrating alarms.  All public areas of the hotel are fully accessible.  There is a wireless internet connection, but a charge applies to this.   Parking is in the airport car parks at Terminal 1.

Premier Inn Birmingham NEC/Airport

The Premier Inn is 5 minutes’ drive from Birmingham Airport. It has free parking for guests whilst they’re staying at the hotel and long term parking packages are available. They include a night’s accommodation for up to 2 adults and 2 children, a Grab & Go breakfast and long term parking, starting from £85 (price correct April 2010). It’s a 3 star hotel.

Arden Hotel and Leisure Club

This 3 star hotel has a large car park with 350 spaces. It’s free to use whilst you’re resident at the hotel and they offer 14 day airport parking packages. Longer stays can also be arranged. The volcanic eruptions have caused disruption to passengers at airports across Europe. It’s the worst meteorological situation Eurocontrol, the European air traffic control organisation, has ever dealt with.  A volcano erupted in Iceland on Wednesday, sending up a cloud of ash that then drifted across Europe.  It contains particles of rock, glass and sand which can jam aircraft engines.  This has caused planes to crash in the past so flight bans have been put in place for safety reasons. UK airspace was closed on Thursday afternoon as the cloud enveloped the country.  Only a tiny number of services have been allowed to fly since then, as gaps appeared in the cloud, and this situation will continue until Saturday afternoon at least.  News teams have been vox popping stranded passengers across the UK, and some of them are clearly more upset about it than others, judging by this live clip from Sky News.

Etrop Grange

This is a 4 star Georgian Mansion, about 2 minutes’ drive from the airport.  It is decorated in an elegant country house style, with lots of period features.  Most of the bedrooms have either brass or four-poster beds and some of them have Jacuzzi bath.  The hotel’s restaurant has been awarded an AA rosette.  There’s WiFi internet throughout the building which is free for guests to use.  They also provide complimentary transport to the airport, which is available on request 24 hours a day.

Stanneylands Hotel

This is another 4 star country house hotel, about 10 minutes from the airport.  It is set in wooded grounds and the restaurant has been awarded 2 AA rosettes.  There is also a café bar which is the setting for performances on the grand piano.  Deluxe suites and executive rooms have plasma screen TVs and high tech sound systems.  There’s free WiFi access throughout the building.  They offer long term parking packages which include a night’s accommodation and complimentary taxis to the airport.

Manchester Airport Marriott Hotel

This modern 4 star hotel is about a mile and a half from the airport.  There are extensive leisure and fitness facilities including a swimming pool and whirlpool, a gym and complimentary exercise classes.  You can also book some beauty therapies in the spa. Guests staying in executive rooms and suites have access to the Executive Lounge in the hotel and are provided with complimentary food and soft drinks.  There’s wireless internet in the rooms, although there is a charge for this.  The Marriott has airport parking deals on offer and provides a shuttle bus service to the terminals.

Rylands Farm Guest House

This is an old farm with plenty of parking on-site.  It’s free whilst you’re staying there.  After you jet off on holiday, it costs £25 for 1 week’s parking, £40 for 2 weeks and an additional £12 for any further weeks.  The owners will transport you to and from the airport free of charge, between 7 am (or 8 am on weekends and holidays) and 8.30 pm.  The 3 star commended guest house is about 10 minutes’ drive from the airport.

The car park at this hotel is managed by an external company, Britannia Parking.  There’s a £5 charge for one day and you can leave the car for up to 4 days, which costs £40.  Four days is the maximum stay, so if you’re off on a long trip this will be no use to you.  There’s a shuttle bus to and from the airport, but be aware that there is an extra cost for this.  The 3 star hotel is 10 minutes away from the airport.

This B&B offers long term parking at a cheap daily rate, and provides complimentary airport transfers.  It’s about 4 miles from the terminal and takes 12 minutes.

Jumbo Hostel, Arlanda Airport, Sweden

This plane had a long life in service, ferrying tourists around the world and flying Muslim pilgrims to Mecca. But by 2006 it had been reduced to a mouldy wreck, abandoned at Arlanda Airport in Sweden. An entrepreneur saw an opportunity and snapped it up, transforming the Boeing 747 into a 25 room hostel. The interior was completely cleaned out and refurbished, with new wiring and plumbing, and the space divided into bedrooms and bathrooms. It has kept some original features, like overhead cabins for storage and repositioned airline chairs in the lounge. The hostel has a view of the landing strip at the airport and those not staying overnight are welcome to come in for a coffee or a walk out on the wing.

This is budget accommodation – you can expect to sleep on a bunk bed in a room about 6 metres square. You can opt to share with others, dormitory style, but private rooms for up to 3 guests are available. The most luxurious space is the cockpit suite, which sleeps 2 and is the only bedroom with a private bathroom. It’s being billed as the honeymoon suite, with marriage ceremonies to take place on the wing outside. You might not quite qualify for the mile high club, but it’s the next best thing.

727 Fuselage, Costa Rica

         
This plane looks like it has crash landed in a tropical paradise, but it was really brought here bit by bit from its prior resting place at San Jose Airport. It’s another plane that came to the end of its working life and was given a makeover by a hotelier with an eye for unusual accommodation.

This one is at the more luxurious end of the market. The whole Boeing 727 has been turned into one exclusive suite. Set on a 50-foot high pedestal, it has views over the ocean and the jungle. A hardwood deck has been added to the outside and there is a dining area, kitchenette and 2 bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. The interior has been covered in teak panelling, giving it the feel of a top-class treehouse.

Airplane Suite, Teuge Airport, Holland

This plane was being used as a village restaurant when it was bought and brought to the edge of the runway at Teuge Airport in Holland. It has been transformed into a 5 star hotel suite and meeting room, complete with Jacuzzi, sauna, bar and kitchen, as well as all mod cons like flat screen televisions and wireless internet.

The four engine plane was built in 1960 and was used by the East German government, to carry officials like Erich Honecker around the world. It’s an Ilyushin 18, which was a popular Soviet Union aircraft. Its Cold War-era owners could hardly have imagined that the plane would one day be kitted out as a playroom for wealthy capitalist businessmen.

Manned Cloud

If you really want your hotel to get off the ground, you’re going to have to wait a little longer. The Manned Cloud won’t be launched until 2020. It’s still in development, but a flying hotel is an exciting prospect and could be part of a revolution in the way we travel. The technology hasn’t been fully worked out yet, but it’s an airship that will be fuelled by some kind of gas. It will be huge – the length of 2 football pitches – with 20 bedrooms for up to 40 guests. It will have all the features you would expect in a quality hotel such as a restaurant, bar, spa and gym. But it will be able to take you places you have never been before.

The idea is that it could land in beauty spots such as Thailand and the Caribbean, stay there for a week or so and then take off again. This would allow tourists to visit these destinations, whilst leaving the natural landscape unspoilt by permanent building.

And there’s another airborne hotel on the horizon, with a prototype expected as early as 2010. It will be the cruise ship of the sky. Travellers who choose to sail around the sea are more interested in the journey than the destination, and it will be the same for those aboard the Aeroscraft. They will travel at a leisurely speed, with time to relax and enjoy the unrivalled and ever-changing views of the earth below. The Aeroscraft is a cross between an airship and an aeroplane. It has electric engines, which are both quiet and environmentally friendly. It takes off vertically, so it doesn’t need a runway, and it will be able to land on earth, snow or water, making it a very flexible means of transport.
